The discussion panel was opened by the speech of Alexander Vasiliev, Editor-in-chief of Astrakhan-24 TV-channel. He said, “Laurels are reaped by those who finish the marathon. Our marathon started a quarter of a century ago and finished with the signing of the Convention”.

The speakers reminded of the results of the Convention on legal status of the Caspian Sea. The process of working out of this convention has been under way since the year of 1996. The project was finally agreed upon at the meeting of foreign ministers of the Caspian states on December 4th-5th, 2017 in Moscow.

The Convention regulates the issues of necessary distinctions, modes of navigation and fishing. It covers the principles of the military-political interaction of the participating countries. The agreement guarantees the use of the Caspian Sea exclusively for peaceful purposes.

The speakers paid special attention to the ecological and touristic issues of the document.

The Astrakhan region is already starting the implementation of the key principles stated in the document.

The Caspian Media Forum is just one of the focus areas. This week Astrakhan is going to host the meeting of the State Duma Committee on Ecology. Some projects on the ecological well-being of the country are being developed.
